Юрій Єгоров
1926–2008 · Odesa, Ukraine
An outstanding Ukrainian artist, painter, and monumentalist, and one of the leading figures and key representatives of the Odesa School of Painting in the second half of the 20th century.s well as graphic art, and created tapestries, ceramics, stained glass, and mosaics.
His work cannot be confined to a single style; it has evolved and blended various movements:
The Odessa School of Painting (southern color palette): His works are distinguished by a distinctive sunny, “southern” color palette, luminosity, and vibrancy—hallmarks of the Odessa artistic tradition.
Impressionism / Post-Impressionism: Yegorov often employed the principles of Impressionist perception of light and color, yet reinterpreted them, returning to these methods throughout his career.
Monumentalism and Generalization: His style is characterized by a striving for monumentality, simplification, and generalization of forms, where real objects (boats, human figures) are transformed into universal signs or symbols.
Nonconformism: He was a participant in the Odessa nonconformist movement (second half of the 20th century), opposing the rigid framework of Socialist Realism.
Existentialism (in early works): In some works from the 1960s (for example, “1918”), a shift away from the romanticization characteristic of the “austere style” toward a dramatic, almost existential worldview can be observed.
